Thinking About Eloping in a National Park? Here’s Why It Might Be Perfect for You
So maybe you’ve been daydreaming about skipping the huge wedding and doing something a little more relaxed, a little more you. Something outdoorsy, romantic, and totally stress-free, just you two (and maybe a few close people), saying your vows somewhere gorgeous. I love that. And honestly? National park elopements are one of the most beautiful ways to do it.
Let’s talk permits + planning
Most national parks do require a Special Use Permit for weddings and elopements. It’s usually a pretty simple application and a small fee ...around $75 to $500 depending on the location. The National Park Service has a full list of parks and permit info, and honestly, they make it really easy to figure out what’s allowed and what’s not.
You’ll also want to check if there are entrance fees for the park itself ... those usually apply to your guests and vendors too.
Do you have to hike?
Nope! This is one of the best parts! National park elopements are super flexible. While there are some spots that require a hike to get to, there are also plenty of stunning locations that are super accessible. Some are literally just a short walk from the parking lot or reachable by shuttle.
So if hiking in wedding attire sounds like a no-go, no worries at all. You can totally get dropped off at a scenic overlook, walk just a few steps, and still have the most dreamy, intimate ceremony.
But if you do like the idea of walking a little…
There are tons of ways to make it comfortable. You can wear hiking shoes or comfy sneakers for the walk, then change into your dress shoes when you get there. You can pack your dress and get ready on-site, or just clip up the train while you walk. I’ve seen so many creative ways to make it work without feeling like a full-on hike.
A few national parks that are perfect for elopements:
Yosemite: Think big cliffs, waterfalls, and those iconic valley views. Great options for easy-access ceremony spots like Tunnel View.
Joshua Tree: Magical desert light, cool rock formations, and a laid-back feel.
Zion: Red rocks, river views, and shuttle access that makes getting around super easy.
Olympic: Forests, mountains, and even coastal views. Kinda has it all.
Each park has its own rules and vibe, so if you’re not sure where to start — I’d love to help you figure out which one fits your vision.
What to wear (and carry!)
You don’t need to go full camping mode. Lightweight dresses, easy layers, and comfy shoes go a long way. If you’re walking, you can bring a little bag with touch-up stuff, water, and maybe even snacks. It’s your day ! You make the rules.
Whether you want to hike in boots or step out of a car in heels, I’m here to help make it feel fun, relaxed, and completely authentic to you.
Eloping in a national park doesn’t mean you’re missing out on anything . If anything, you’re gaining something deeper. A quiet, intentional day surrounded by beauty and love. No stress, no expectations, just the two of you being fully present.
